In addition to delighting more than 36,000 audience members from the concert stage each year, the SD Master Chorale also enriches lives through extensive community outreach programs. The impact of these small-scale outreach activities is augmented each season by two larger-scale “inreach” concerts, designed to engage elementary and high school students, respectively.
Educational Resources for Elementary School Students
The SD Master Chorale believes in sharing what we have in common: our voice. We have developed educational videos for teachers and parents to use in the elementary school classroom or home to help ignite an interest in choral music. These engaging and interactive videos, and support materials, will teach students about the history of choral music.
In the 2018-2019 season, fifteen SD Master Chorale volunteers delighted 252 senior citizens, staff, and guests at ten Senior Sing-Alongs. These live programs are offered free of charge to retirement homes and senior centers throughout San Diego County, with an emphasis on small facilities with limited entertainment budgets. This greatly needed service directly benefits our older neighbors and their caregivers, particularly those who may feel isolated in assisted-living and memory care facilities.

With special emphasis on underprivileged schools, eight SD Master Chorale volunteers also engaged 566 elementary students in our 2018-2019 season by giving thirteen classroom presentations of our standards-based “History of Choral Music” program, designed for grades three and four.

Collaborations with Elementary School VAPA Programs
For the past two seasons, one of our annual self-produced concerts in the community has been in collaboration with the Visual and Performing Arts program of a local elementary school district. Our “Lift. EVERY. Voice.” concert in May 2019 was in partnership with the Chula Vista Elementary School District VAPA program, and in November 2019 our “What a Wonderful World” concert featured about seventy San Marcos Unified Elementary School District VAPA students singing with the Chorale. Plans are underway for a similar program in the San Diego Unified School District in our 2020-2021 season.

High School Honor Choir
In February 2020, the Chorale’s fourth annual High School Honor Choir provided a full-day choral workshop experience in Mission Valley for 137 outstanding young singers, followed by a free concert for community members, during which these students sang alongside the full Chorale.
