ANNOUNCING THE MIXTAPE Concert Program!

The San Diego Master Chorale invited our audience and singers to help us do something bold: help build our concert program from scratch, creating the ultimate choral playlist.

From a curated playlist of 275 titles across six categories, we opened the voting—and you showed up in force! Now, after hundreds of votes from both audiences and singers, we’re thrilled to reveal the final playlist for our season finale concert: Mixtape.

Join us on May 31 and June 1 for an unforgettable celebration of your musical picks, brought to life by the San Diego Master Chorale.

How the Mixtape Was Made

We asked our community to vote on their favorite choral works — you chose from six diverse categories, plus the chance to write in your own favorites. We also invited singers to weigh in, and your combined votes shaped the final program. Each piece represents a shared moment of musical connection between singers and audience—a true community mixtape.

— Requiem selections by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Dies Irae, Confutatis, Lacrymosa [CATEGORY 1: Masterworks & Early Masters]

— Yesterday by The Beatles, arr. Bob Chilcott [CATEGORY 2: Opera Choruses, Broadway & Popular]

— The Lord Bless You and Keep You by John Rutter [CATEGORY 3: Anthems, Motets & Partsongs]

— Shenandoah, Traditional, arr. James Erb [CATEGORY 4: Folksongs & Spirituals]

— How Can I Keep From Singing, arr. Gwyneth Walker [CATEGORY 4: Folksongs & Spirituals]

— Ave Maria by Franz Biebl [CATEGORY 5: Contemporary A Cappella]

— Ubi Caritas by Ola Gjeilo [CATEGORY 5: Contemporary A Cappella]

— Sure on This Shining Night by Morten Lauridsen [CATEGORY 6: Contemporary Accompanied]

Write-In Winners

As part of the Mixtape voting experience, we invited audience members and singers to suggest their own favorite choral works as write-ins. After reviewing dozens of creative submissions, we drew three at random to be included in the concert program:

— Medley from Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim, arr. Mark Brymer

— The Battle of Jericho, arr. Moses Hogan

— Arirang, arr. Hyo-Won Woo

These surprise additions are the perfect finishing touch to our community-created playlist!

Bonus Tracks

Just like any great mixtape, we couldn’t resist throwing in a few bonus tracks—fan favorites and choral gems that didn’t win the vote but still deserved a spot on the program. These selections add variety, surprise, and a touch of nostalgia:

— And So It Goes by Billy Joel, arr. Bob Chilcott

— What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor?, Traditional, arr. Parker/Shaw

Think of these as the hidden tracks at the end of the album—the ones that stay with you long after the music fades.

Encore Battle: You Choose the Finale!

You’ll also help us pick one final track—live at the concert. At each performance, you’ll be handed a voting ticket. Drop it in the box of the song you want to hear as the encore. Only one will be performed as the grand finale—and you get to decide which one!

— Make Our Garden Grow by Leonard Bernstein

— O Fortuna from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff

Want to influence the vote even more? Each dollar you add to the voting box counts as an extra vote! The winning piece will be announced live and performed on the spot as the encore.

Your Mixtape is Ready.

Join us for an unforgettable evening where your choices take center stage, in a genre-bending celebration of choral music that reflects you—this is one you won’t want to miss!
