San Diego, CA (February 20, 2024) — Witness the future of choral music when 100 gifted students from across San Diego County take the stage for the San Diego Master Chorale’s annual Honor Choir.

After a day immersed in workshops and rehearsals, these talented young singers will unite with the SD Master Chorale for a spectacular performance Saturday March 16 at 4:30 pm at First United Methodist Church, 2111 Camino del Rio S., San Diego. Tickets are $15 adults, $10 senior and active military, $5 students, and free for children 12 and younger.

Beginning at 8:30 am on Saturday March 16th, high school singers from San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties will participate in all day workshops and rehearsals, led by San Diego Master Chorale Music Director John Russell. The singers, nominated by teachers from across Southern California, will also participate in music making activities with Special Guest Conductor Brian Lustig from First United Methodist Church.

Following the workshops and rehearsals, the Honor Choir will join the singers of the San Diego Master Chorale for an unforgettable concert filled with masterworks and the great choral composers of today. Highlights include Durufle’s Ubi Caritas, a beautiful arrangement of Danny Boy arranged by Jonathan Willcocks and two settings of We are The Music Makers, which is the theme of this year’s event.

The San Diego Master Chorale’s Honor Choir concert creates a harmony that combines youthful energy with the wisdom of experienced voices and is one of the most highly anticipated concerts of the year.

“As a teacher, I really admire John Russell and his expertise,” said Wendy Charines, San Ysidro High School Choir Director. “The first time I brought a group of students to Honor Choir, they came back with such motivation. They can see that there is a choir at the next level they can sing with, they can create harmonies and create different tone in their voices, and the musicality is just at a different level. It opens their eyes and ears to something else, something bigger, and that’s always awesome to see with the kids.”
